The crush washer (also known as a pinion collapsible spacer or crush collar) is a deformable steel sleeve used inside the differential of Ford Atlas rear axles.

The crush washer slides onto the pinion shaft between the inner and outer pinion bearings. As you tighten the pinion flange nut, the washer intentionally collapses in a controlled manner. This compression establishes and maintains the exact pinion bearing preload required to prevent play and maintain smooth gear mesh with the crown wheel.
